School's Out Forever

All photos courtesy of Daniel Palillo

With all of the 90's nostalgia that's been floating around over the past few seasons, it's surprising few designers have managed to fully capture the apathetic attitude and the "whatever" spirit of the decade.  Even though Daniel Palillo's latest spring collection doesn't contain any throwback silhouettes, and only offers a handful of stylistic references to that era, the clothes fully channel the spirit of grunge, and the generation of kids that were written off as slackers.  Oversized jersey shirts, varsity jackets and cheerleader uniforms are emblazoned with phrases like "work sucks" and "I hate my job," or bear the proud label of "slacker." The oversized pajama-like pants and shirts encourage wearing your bed clothes to work, and to do as you please, rather than what someone tells you.  Even though Palillo celebrates this laissez-faire approach to life, he's the last one who'll be caught slacking; this collection is his largest yet.

Escape From New York

The best bed and breakfast you've never heard of, Ashton House at Swarthmore College. LAMO shoes, Lebor Gabala dress, Norma Kamali Sunglasses, Jerome Dreyfuss bag, Ted Muehling silver bangle

Even though New York has been pleasantly cool this summer, I joined the mass exodus from the city and turned my August three-day weekend into a four-day mini-getaway.  You can't get very far in four days, so we kept it close to home, with a short trip up to Philadelphia and Swarthmore (my alma mater), and then on to Baltimore.

The trip was quick, but I managed to squeeze in trips to the Mutter Museum, Philadelphia's macabre medical oddity collection, the American Visionary Art Museum, Baltimore's outstanding outsider art center, and the must see National Aquarium.  And of course, for the full road trip experience, I had to hit up some Food Channel-approved restaurants for some all-American comforts.  Crab was eaten at every other meal, including a classic crab bucket at Phillip's on the waterfront, and some soft shell crab at the critically hyped Woodberry Kitchen.  Anthony Bourdain's tips lead us to Paesano's sandwich shop in Philadelphia for completely over-the-top, heart-stopping (as in cardiac arrest) subs, as well as Han Dynasty, which is some of the best, and spiciest, Chinese food in Philadelphia, or anywhere.  While I normally do not pay heed to the advice of Guy Fieri, I had to agree with his praise of Blue Moon Cafe; even though I generally dislike both Cap'n Crunch cereal and French Toast, I found the combination of the two to be straight out of one of Willy Wonka's more highly-evolved dreams.  The only thing I missed out on was shopping--any tips for next time?

Come One, Come All! The 2nd Annual SUPER(DUPER)MARKET!

Cynthia Rowley's CuRious Candy girls doled out star-spangled sour apple cotton candy

In recent years, the pop-up market has become a ubiquitous summer staple in New York.  Even though you can find a flea market or food fair fit for every taste and predilection, you can always leave it to Paper Magazine to put together the most wacky and fabulous selection of only-in-New York eats and treats, fun bits and bobs, and assorted freaky downtown folk.   This year vendors range from cult foodie favorites like Steve's Authentic Key Lime Pies (which normally requires a trip to Red Hook), La Newyorkina, and The Brinery, to Papermag friends from around the country, like Screaming Mimi's, Creative Growth Art Center, and Modern Appealing Clothing.  If you're in New York this weekend, make sure to stop by for a meal, a snack, or some very artisanal grocery shopping.  All details below.
